Course Description

Analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating art. Critical methodology as employed in classroom teaching strategies.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Completing a separate project, to be determined by mutual agreement between the professor and the student. Results will be presented in a written and/or oral form.

Course Objectives

This course is designed to provide students with the rationale and methodology for teaching art criticism and fostering aesthetic understanding in PreK-12 educational settings. Emphasis will be placed upon the development of curriculum designed to communicate essential ideas to this audience. Content will focus upon modern and contemporary art.


Topical Outline

Students will explore various strategies for encouraging response to works of art. They will analyze and interpret diverse works of art in both written and oral form. Readings, class discussions, and teaching assignments will prepare the student to create curriculum designed to encourage in-depth response to works of art.
