Course Objectives
Student teachers are expected to make the transition from student to teacher during this semester. They demonstrate that they can design and implement art instruction reflective of current national, state, and local guidelines; manage classroom situations; and work effectively with students in grades preK-12. Student teachers will: 1. design lessons that effectively capture state teaching standards in the visual arts and present these lessons (often using oral communication) to their assigned students and classes at their Student Teaching school sites, 2. adapt their presentation and communication of these lessons to the age-appropriate levels of their student audiences (various levels of K-12 schooling), 3. communicate regularly, effectively, and professionally with their assigned supervising teacher and other school personnel.
Topical Outline
Students are placed in an elementary setting for the first half of the semester and in a secondary setting for the second half of the semester under the supervision of experienced art teachers and university supervising faculty. The student teaching experience is designed to help the student gradually assume the sole responsibility for preparing instruction and teaching throughout the school day. It is the culminating experience in art teacher preparation.
