Course Description
Mass media in the United States from the colonial period to the present. Special attention is given to newspapers, magazines, radio, and television and their relationship to the history and development of the nation.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students are expected to do additional outside reading and a longer term paper using largely primary sources.

Course Objectives
This course is designed to acquaint students with the development of U.S. mass media as social, political, cultural and economic forces. The course should help the college realize some of the outcomes included in its assessment plan.
Topical Outline
Roots of American mass media; Economic consideration in media development and expansion; Role of individual initiative and creativity in mass media development; Contributions of minority groups and women to media development; Legal environment of U.S. mass media; Relationship of media to other institutions in American society.
