Course Objectives
The main objective of this course is to provide upper division majors in the Department of Romance Languages with the opportunity to do independent research under the supervision of a faculty member. It is only used on rare occasions when a Portuguese minor or a Romance Language major needs one more course to graduate, and has already taken the other 4000-level courses that are offered during their last semester at UGA. The student usually meets once a week with the faculty member to discuss the assigned readings and, eventually, the term paper s/he will turn in at the end of the semester. Most of the work for this course is done in the target language (Portuguese); therefore, oral communication and writing skills are given the same importance as analytical skills.
Topical Outline
Topics will vary from student to student, and from teacher to teacher (this course is only taught by tenured and tenure track faculty members). Topics will be selected according to the needs and interests of the students. Students are required to meet with the faculty member on a regular basis (usually once a week) to discuss the assigned readings, and to prepare a 3000-word term paper by the end of the semester.
