TESOL and World Language Curriculum and Methods, Grades 6-12


Course Description

Current theoretical, methodological, and practical issues relevant to TESOL and world language educators. Reading materials and activities help prepare well-informed, effective, and reflective practitioners for grades 6-12 in the fields of TESOL and world language education.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be assigned additional readings from leading academic research journals on the topics that deal with theoretical, methodological, and practical issues relevant to world language educators. Graduate students will be asked to reflect on and discuss additional questions (based on the additional readings) raised in the course blog in addition to the shared questions that all students will be asked to respond to. Graduate students will additionally be asked to make conference-format presentations in class on the topic of their choosing and based on a research article. In all of their major assignments (teaching unit, observations, textbook analysis), graduate students will be asked to draw on the additional, advanced-level readings assigned to them.

Course Objectives

By the end of the semester, students will be able to: -identify the particular theoretical approach behind a given teaching act or lesson design and demonstrate this competency by including rationales in lesson plans, critiquing teaching acts on video, and designing lesson plans in accordance with particular methodologies -use the WIDA or ACTFL proficiency standards and can-do statements as a guide toward creating proficiency-oriented classroom activities and demonstrate this competency by designing lesson plans and classroom activities -evaluate various pedagogical practices in light of WIDA or ACTFL proficiency standards, second language acquisition (SLA) theories, and current foreign language “best practices” -apply knowledge of second language acquisition (SLA) theory, current world language and TESOL teaching methodology, and PCK (pedagogical content knowledge) to individual projects and demonstrate this competency by developing their own “TESOL or world language teaching philosophy” statement -identify and evaluate various approaches to classroom management and demonstrate this competency by reflecting orally on various classroom management scenarios and case studies
