Multicultural Service-Learning Practicum


Course Description

Students in this course will engage in twenty hours of service- learning experiences in a multicultural setting related to education and other areas related to kinesiology. A student contract and journal are required.

Student learning Outcomes

  • Students will develop teaching and leadership skills while contributing to the community.
  • Students will identify issues and problems that impact on students' activities and educational endeavors.
  • Students will develop, refine, and broaden their decision making and human relations skills that, as educators, they will use in all aspects of their teaching lives while working with diverse clientele in schools and in the community.
  • Students will see their potential as educators who can positively influence the total community.
  • Students will identify, explore, interpret and clarify new directions and goals that relate to culturally diverse communities.
  • Students will demonstrate reflective skills through keeping a journal of their experiences.
  • Students will develop and improve communication skills that will allow students to be culturally competent in such areas as team building, effective listening, cooperative decision making, promoting mutuality of purpose and action, accepting and using feedback from several sources, and ensuring the involvement of all team members.
  • Students will develop positive attitudes as they relate to people from different cultures

Topical Outline

  • 1. Complete 20 hours of service to your service site.
  • 2. Complete a learning contract for your service site.
  • 3. Attend class and meet with instructor when directed.
  • 4. Keep and submit a journal that identifies: a. what you did during your 20 hours b. how those experiences relate to your professional goals and your ability to serve a multicultural clientele c. How your service experiences will affect you as a citizen in a diverse society and world.
