Seminar in Diversity of Microbial Research


Course Description

Physiology, ecology, phylogeny, and genetics of various bacterial groups, including studies on adaption to high or low temperatures, methanogens, human and plant pathogens, bioremediation, mercury metabolism, nitrogen fixation, heme biosynthesis, protein folding, gene expression, and cell-cell interactions. Emphasis will be placed on methods used to research these problems.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • This course is for all graduate students. Its purpose is to is give students the opportunity to read and discuss current research papers in the area of Microbiology.

Topical Outline

  • Multiple Journal Clubs will be available each semester. Some may be become recurring; others may address a focused topic of interest as a single offering. The format involves critical discussion of the literature relevant to the topic involved. In general, a student participant will present a summary and lead a critical discussion of a paper(s). The choice of papers can be by students, instructors, faculty, or a combination. Faculty member(s) that participate in the Journal Club (either out of interest or as Instructor of Record) will raise questions for discussion and in general facilitate participation and engagement.
