Course Objectives

The goal of this course is to give German majors an opportunity to explore a topic of interest not covered in regular courses through independent research. It will provide students the opportunity for individual contact and mentoring by a Germanic and Slavic Studies faculty member and will develop students' communicative proficiency in German, cultural knowledge, and/or theoretical and analytical skills (depending on the particular topic). Students will meet regularly with the faculty mentor to discuss readings and develop a course project. The final product of the course will be a substantial piece of work, which may take various forms, such as a research paper, a translation, pedagogical materials, creative writing, visual project, etc.

Topical Outline

Students will pursue an individual directed project in German literature or linguistics. Each student will submit an individual study plan.
