Course Description
This first-year Ph.D. seminar introduces students to the culture of doctoral studies within the context of a Research Intensive University and orients them to their role as developing social work scholars. Through readings, discussions, presentations, and experiences, students integrate the philosophy of science with theory and research.

Course Objectives
•To provide a medium for first-year doctoral students to establish a cohesive cohort that is socially supportive and supportive of each other’s scholarship •To familiarize first-year doctoral students with selected social work and other UGA faculty for mentorship in their programs of study •To establish first-year doctoral students’ familiarity with the philosophy of science and its relationship to theory and research •To expose first year doctoral students to a variety of approaches to social work and behavioral science research related to diverse areas of practice •To contextualize the experience of doctoral education within a Research Intensive University •To provide a venue for students’ development and socialization as scholars
