Course Objectives

The CURO Apprentice Seminar is designed to develop a community of young scholars who have successfully competed for funding to conduct research at the University of Georgia; to promote networking among students; to hone critical thinking and skills in writing, reading, research, discussion and presentation; and to enhance students' knowledge of research topics and methods across disciplines. Students also gain discipline specific skills in their chosen area of concentration. Course objectives: To familiarize undergraduate students with research opportunities available on campus and beyond; To broaden students’ understanding and appreciation of all research (Fall Semester) and deepen skills in one specific area of concentration (Spring Semester); To help students develop knowledge of how research is conducted and the practical, ethical, and valuable implications of research; To promote dialogue among undergraduate researchers in order to develop a better understanding of research methods and agendas within and across academic disciplines; To provide undergraduate researchers with the opportunity to improve their critical thinking, research writing and presentation skills through papers, discussion and structured comments and feedback from their peers; To facilitate students’ knowledge of interdisciplinary implications of research; To encourage students’ breadth of knowledge about research across disciplines as well as within their chosen field.


Topical Outline

Individual Writing Assignments. This class is a writing intensive course. The culminating project, the Research Portfolio, will be a collection of your final papers that display effective communication and writing.
