Course Description

Teaching materials, methods, techniques, and strategies utilized in programs of workforce education.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
In consultation with the instructor of the course, the graduate student will propose and prepare a scholarly work that demonstrates their knowledge of the course content and related policies and practices.

Course Objectives

1. Understand central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structure of the program area taught and create meaningful learning experiences for students. 2. Understand how students differ in their approaches to learning; develop instructional opportunities appropriate for diverse learners and diverse learning styles. 3. Understand and use a variety of instructional strategies. 4. Use effective communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and interaction. 5. Plan instruction based on knowledge of subject matter, students, the community, and curriculum goals. 6. Understand and use formal and informal assessment strategies. 7. Reflect on teaching as a means of planning for continuing professional growth and development. 8. Create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.


Topical Outline

The course syllabus is a general plan for the course; deviations announced to the class by the instructor may be necessary. 1. Introduction: What is teaching? States of teaching; characteristics of effective teachers 2. Positive expectations; multiple intelligences; learning styles 3. Inviting students to learn; contextual teaching and learning; increasing positive student behavior; dealing with assignments; dealing with disruptive students 4.
