Elementary Zulu I


Course Description

Fundamentals of the Zulu language and culture which has spread to cover communities in South Africa as well as outside of South African borders to the Southern parts of Zimbabwe, and parts of Botswana, Lesotho, and Swaziland. Emphasis will be placed on grammar, pronunciation, reading, writing, and conversational skills.

Course Objectives

This course is designed to encourage communication with IsiZulu speakers and to develop oral/aural skills will be the course's principal focus. To reinforce this, there will be numerous exercises, readings and video presentations to expose students to the IsiZulu language and culture. A minimum of one hour per week in the language lab is required. At the end of the course, students are expected to have a basic understanding of key cultural issue associated with the language and to critically evaluate enhancing cultural material through films and simple language dialogs. Students will also be expected to be able to construct simple sentences that are grammatically correct and pragmatically acceptable by native speakers, write a 300-word essay using simple Swahili, sustain ten minutes of conversation that include self introduction, introducing others, describing objects, reporting incidents or events including dates and times.

Week 1/2/3: Greetings, introduction to the sounds, Sentence formation, common nouns Week 4: More nouns, personal subjective concords (e.g., he/she) Week 5: Verbs and pronouns. Position, location Week 6: More pronouns. Counting 1-20 Week 7: Learning about questions. What, Where, and Why Week 8: Commands( Imperatives) Instructions and requests Week 9: Future tense, review and midterms Week 10: Past tense, to be present and not to be present Week 11: Days and times Week 12: Buying in the market Week 13: Giving directions and ordering in a restaurant Week 14: Salutations and Farewell Week 15: Cultural review
