Course Objectives
This course is designed to build fluency in written and spoken Zulu. Students will be expected to know and be comfortable with the material that is on the Web designed specifically for them. Students in this course are also expected occasionally to act as TA's for the elementary classes, with the instructor's supervision. Students will read a variety of cultural works, including poetry and critical articles. The main objectives include: 1. To introduce students to specific aspects of the Zulu language and literature, including aspects of its history and early civilization. 2. To explore the different levels of linguistic and cultural influences on the language and the impact these influences have on the everyday use of the language by the speakers. 3. To offer students an opportunity to explore aspects of the Zulu culture from different lenses that encourages critical analysis and comparisons with other cultures of the world while using authentic Zulu material.
Topical Outline
Class activities will be organized around a core of grammatical and functional topics that will include but not be limited to: - IsiZulu music and Songs - Tense variations - Proverbs and poems The readings will be distributed throughout the course, and taken mainly from IsiZulu textbooks, newspapers, and creative writings.
