Introduction to African Languages and Cultures


Course Description

Overview of African languages and cultures, their diversity, and their similarities. Critical approach to discourses on Africa to provide background information on the diversity of languages and cultures on the African continent. Students will learn about aspects of some African cultures through prepared lectures, assigned readings, presentations, and featured documentaries.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, students will be able to define the relationship between language, culture, and ethnic identity based on introduction to some of the languages and cultures on the African continent.
  • By the end of the course, students will be able to describe the geographical distribution and classification of languages and cultures on the African continent.
  • By the end of the course, students will be able to appraise and compare socio-cultural information about some of the diverse languages and cultures on the African continent, with particular attention to identifying variable elements of language and culture on the African continent.
