Critical Thinking

Course Description

Housing policies at the federal, state, and local levels as they relate to current housing markets. Barriers and incentives for housing development activities created by regulations, finance, and taxation. The role of public/private initiatives in the provision of housing.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Students will be required to examine a local housing policy issue within the context of a national policy issue being discussed in the course. The student will be expected to thoroughly examine the issue through interviews with various local officials. The results of their interviews will be presented in class and graded for content, analytical acuity, and presentation quality.

  • Students will develop an understanding of the role that federal, state, and local governments play in the development and regulation of housing.
  • Students will understand the role and impact of the consumer through appropriate strategies.
  • Students will critically examine new housing policy proposals.
  • Students will engage in structured policy debates to evaluate and present evidence-based housing policy solutions.
  • Students will collaborate in project groups, assuming leadership roles where appropriate, to prepare for and deliver policy arguments.
