Course Description
Provides foundational information and experience for certification as a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Housing Counselor. Students will learn housing counseling techniques related to financial management, fair housing, affordability, tenancy, homeownership, and foreclosure avoidance. Students will apply course content through service learning hours in the community.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Students will work with instructors to determine a topic for a
5-8 page paper or other course-related project.

Course includes a service-learning project during the semester that either employs skills or knowledge learned in the course or teaches new skills or knowledge related to course objectives. Student engagement in the service-learning component will be up to 25% of overall instruction time.

• To develop an understanding of the Housing Counseling Profession in preparation for taking the national certification examination. • To provide an in-depth review of all major topics included in the national examination, including career opportunities for working with a diversity of owner and renter clientele. • To provide students with housing counseling experience in a community-based setting.
