Course Description
Content, methods, and materials appropriate for preK through 8th grade mathematics instruction. Integration of instruction and assessment and appropriate use of technology.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students are expected to engage in a teaching project
where they design and implement a student-centered conceptually-
based lesson that encourages mathematical discussions, while
paying special attention to the Mathematical Practices, and submit
an 8-12-page write up.

Course Objectives
The course is designed to: 1. Help students become aware of children’s mathematical thinking, how it differs from adult thinking, and how it might impact teaching; 2. Expose students to the content, methods, and materials appropriate for PreK-8th grade mathematical instruction; 3. Help students become aware of students’ and teachers’ roles in the mathematics classroom and how this affects planning for and teaching mathematics; 4. Expose students to technology that is appropriate for use in a PreK-8th grade classroom; 5. Cause students to examine their beliefs about the goals and content of PreK-8th grade mathematics instruction; 6. Provide students with alternative methods of assessment and ways of planning instruction based on assessment.
