Course Description
Learning characteristics of students with special needs, including those who are disabled, economically and academically disadvantaged. Implications for workforce education are considered and modifications of curriculum and instruction are identified.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
In consultation with the instructor of the course, the graduate student will propose and prepare a scholarly work that demonstrates their knowledge of the course content and related policies and practices.

Course Objectives
Upon conclusion of the course the participant will: • List the nature and needs of special needs learners • Identify and assess the aptitudes, abilities, and limitations of special needs learners • Outline the problems and concerns confronting the vocational education teacher, special needs learner, regular class student, parents, and employers • Interpret relevant state and federal legislation relating to special needs learners in vocational programs • Prepare an outline of the basic elements of vocational programs for special needs learners • Explain the identification and placement procedures involved in placing special needs learners in vocational programs • Utilize the resources available in implementing the best education plan possible for special needs learners • Utilize the support personnel available and an understanding of the supplementary resources which can be obtained through cooperative planning • Identify instructional materials and techniques which may aid in implementing vocational programs for special needs learners • Identify, critique, and modify instructional materials for special needs learners • Indicate realistic and appropriate procedures for evaluating vocational programs for special needs learners • Identify a variety of agencies and organizations available to aid in the vocational preparation of special needs learners
