Course Objectives
This course is designed to give you an opportunity to analyze research in the areas of mathematics teaching and teacher education. We will examine various ways of studying the teaching of mathematics and analyze what has been learned from the study of teaching. We will also analyze research and identify issues related to the initial preparation of teachers of mathematics and to the professional development of practicing teachers of mathematics. The objectives of this course are for you to: • become knowledgeable about the major research paradigms for the study of mathematics teaching during the 1900s; • become knowledgeable and conversant with the theoretical and empirical research literature on teaching and teacher education; • become knowledgeable about the recommendations of various professional groups for teacher education programs in mathematics and the various program options currently being employed; • design a research study on teaching and situate it within the body of literature; • design a mathematics methods course for preservice or inservice teachers.
