Course ID:WMST 3010W. 3 hours.
Course Title:Critical Feminist Readings
Course
Description:
Students will learn basic methods of feminist critical reading. This will prepare them to better read and understand feminist theory. Topics will include feminist critical thinking, media literacy and criticism, and text interpretation, including both written and multimedia texts.
Athena Title:Critical Feminist Readings
Equivalent Courses:Not open to students with credit in WMST 3010
Nontraditional Format:This version of the course will be taught as writing intensive, which means that the course will include substantial and ongoing writing assignments that a) relate clearly to course learning; b) teach the communication values of a discipline- for example, its practices of argument, evidence, credibility, and format; and c) prepare students for further writing in their academic work, in graduate school, and in professional life. The written assignments will result in a significant and diverse body of written work (the equivalent of 6000 words or 25 pages). The instructor and/or the teaching assistant assigned to the course will be closely involved in student writing, providing opportunities for feedback and substantive revision. Just as it takes multiple readings to fully understand a text, it takes multiple revisions to craft a text that fully articulates an argument. Because of this, we will be taking advantage of the knowledge present in the classroom by engaging in peer review and revision of all papers. Students will be required to do peer reviews and revisions of written work. At the end of the semester, students will gather the final version of four essays into a portfolio along with a 2-3 page introductory essay. Behind them, they will be expected to include the previous drafts/comments of the four essays. The portfolio will serve as the final project for the course.
