Overview of psychological, social, and physiological determinants of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) use and effects of ATOD use among populations in the United States. Examination of recent trends to understand why individuals engage in substance- using behaviors and public health strategies to prevent or intervene on ATOD use.
