Course Title: | Advanced Public Affairs Communications |
Course Description: | An in-depth view of public affairs communications practices and
careers. Students examine the role and influence of the media
(traditional and emerging) in political and advocacy campaigns
around issues, policy, and legislation, as well as other
advocacy tools, including opinion writing, coalition building,
activism, and grassroots efforts. |

Course Objectives: | •To understand the role and function of editorial boards, how
they develop positions and why, and how opinion editorials
(op-eds), columns, and blogs influence public opinion.
•To understand and practice various forms of research related
to public opinion, and issue and policy research.
•To create a comprehensive advocacy campaign.
•To create advocacy advertising.
•To understand role of press secretaries and public affairs
executives in interacting with the media, and how to develop
effective pitches.
•To develop a deeper understanding of advocacy focusing on
coalition building and the role of activists in shaping public
policy. |
