Course Objectives: | At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Differentiate the regulatory agencies and practice credentials applicable to the profession of athletic training.
2. Identify and apply common legal terminology, concepts, and principles to the practice of athletic training.
3. Analyze and apply the ethical obligations of athletic training professional practice.
4. Develop strategies to avoid ethical concerns in professional practice.
5. Lists the components of a comprehensive risk management plan.
6. Identify the major federal and state regulations relevant to healthcare organizations and direct care providers as they relate to athletic training.
7. Identify the common healthcare facility accrediting agencies and summarize their function.
8. Describe the various health insurance policies and determine the pros and cons of each.
9. Discuss the major components and considerations of healthcare insurance policies.
10. Identify the components of a professional liability insurance policy and the importance of liability coverage.
11. Identify and apply key employment laws that apply to job applicants and employees.
12. Develop an ethical and legal employee recruitment plan that includes, but is not limited to, the position proposal, development of the job description, candidate recruitment, interview process, and offers of employment.
13. Explain the common components of a compensation and benefits package.
14. Describe the process of negotiation for compensation and benefits prior to employment.
15. Develop policies and procedures to aid in risk management and the daily operation of athletic training services.
16. Demonstrate effective and appropriate communications with employers, employees, stakeholders, consumers, payors, and policymakers.
17. Implement a comprehensive patient file management system.
18. Apply the current standards of practice and contemporary principles in the management of medical records and personal protected information.
19. Identify the facility design elements of a safe and efficient clinical practice setting.
20. Identify and apply federal guidelines regarding the design and accessibility of a healthcare facility.
21. Discuss the basic legal responsibilities associated with third-party reimbursement.
22. Explain the role of diagnostic and procedural coding in the third-party reimbursement system.
23. Identify the steps required to file a claim and receive maximum reimbursement from a third-party payor.
24. Differentiate budgeting systems and apply an appropriate system to an athletic training setting.
25. Develop an inventory process to aid in purchasing and cost containment.
26. Describe and implement the purchasing process within an athletic training program.
27. Develop a strategic plan to promote the practice of athletic training.
28. Describe the components of a basic business plan.
29. Identify the general concepts of marketing and apply them to an athletic training practice.
30. Determine the value and worth of services provided.
31. Explain the process to introduce a bill, or modify a law, to benefit the athletic training profession at the state and federal levels.
32. Describe the need to advocate for the athletic training profession.
33. Implement evaluation techniques to improve self and programmatic performance.
34. Identify and apply systems of quality assurance and quality improvement to enhance patient care. |
