Course Objectives: | 1. Students will understand and be able to describe the
methods by which texts from classical antiquity have been
transmitted, preserved, edited, and emended.
2. Students will be able to employ the tools available for
research in the classics through examination of the library's
reference facilities, such as L'annee, Philologique, Pauly-
wissowa, and the various classical journals.
3. Students will become conversant with and be able to discuss
various special topics and areas of study in the classical
world, including the linguistic background of Greek and Latin,
the use of inscriptions and Papyrus remains, the evidence of
coins, the history of archaeology as a means of uncovering the
physical environment of the Greeks and Romans, etc. |
Topical Outline: | I. Introduction to history of classical scholarship and
preservation of texts.
II. Methods and tools of research: bibliographies, lexica,
journals, encyclopedias.
