Course Title: | Service-Learning in School Counseling |
Course Description: | Examination of the practice of service-learning and engagement
with youth, schools, and community organizations through a pre-
determined site work. Application of counseling expertise to
youth, schools, and organizations with social justice missions.
Application of classroom guidance programming. |
Oasis Title: | Serv-Learn School Counseling |
Nontraditional Format: | Course includes a service-learning project during the semester
that either employs skills or knowledge learned in the course or
teaches new skills or knowledge related to course objectives.
Students will be involved in the planning and implementation of
the projects(s) and may spend time outside of the classroom.
Students will be engaged in the service-learning component for
approximately 50-75% of overall instructional time. |

Course Objectives: | Students will:
(1) participate in a meaningful, integrated service-learning
experience through application of new skills and knowledge in
school counseling;
(2) construct their understanding of the role of community
engagement in school counseling;
(3) connect the role of community engagement to their
preparation as a citizen of their community;
(4) engage and reflect on their experiences in the service-
learning placement;
(5) develop skills to enhance their professional practice as a
school counselor;
(6) provide effective classroom guidance programming in a
community setting;
(7) effectively manage student behavior and classroom dynamics
in a developmental and culturally responsive manner; and
(8) gain skills on becoming a reflective practitioner. |
