Course Description: | Key concepts of mental health and illness with an emphasis on
examining major issues in psychiatric diagnosis, including
gender, racial/ethnic, and cultural factors. Students will
become familiar with the DSM classification system and achieve
proficiency in making diagnoses. |

Course Objectives: | Students will become familiar with the DSM-IV-TR and will
examine issues involved in using the DSM-IV-TR as a diagnostic
tool.
Students will learn to effectively use the DSM-IV-TR in making
appropriate diagnosis.
Students will become familiar with appropriate treatment
options for various diagnostic categories.
Students will learn to examine major issues involved in
psychiatric diagnosis.
Students will learn to examine gender, racial/ethnic, and
cultural factors in the diagnostic process.
Students will learn to examine professional and ethical issues
related to making diagnoses.
Students will learn to and demonstrate knowledge of effective
clinical interviewing strategies. |
