Nontraditional Format: | Course includes a service-learning project during the semester
that either employs skills or knowledge learned in the course or
teaches new skills or knowledge related to course objectives.
Students will be involved in the planning and implementation of
the project(s) and may spend time outside of the classroom.
Students will be engaged in the service-learning component for
approximately 25-50% of overall instructional time. |

Course Objectives: | In this course students will learn to:
1. write papers in and out of class using processes that include
discovering ideas; and evidence, organizing that material, and
revising, editing, and polishing the finished papers;
2. think critically so that they can recognize the difference
between opinion and evidence and so that they can support a
complex, challenging thesis;
3. read non-fiction critically and write analytically about it;
4.address papers to a range of audiences;
5. develop a sense of voice appropriate to the subject, the
writer's purpose, the context, and the reader's expectations;
6. compose unified, coherent paragraphs that develop topic
sentences with detailed support;
7. shape effective sentences;
8. write correctly following the conventions of standard edited
English; and document essays using textual evidence;
9. develop an understanding of the strategies, conventions, and
genres of writing used by nonprofits and service organizations;
10. serve the local and broader community by assisting
nonprofits with their writing needs and/or by promoting
nonprofits on campus. |
Topical Outline: | English Composition I is centered around expository writing and
argumentation, as is English Composition I -- Service Learning.
English Composition I -- Service Learning will practice the
skills of expository writing and argumentation in regards to
the topic of writing for nonprofits and service organizations.
Course requirements policies that apply to all sections of this
course will be determined by the current First-Year Composition
Handbook. ENGL1101S follows these requirements, while examining
several additional topics.
