Course Description: | Overview of research and practice on proactive engagement by
schools with families and communities to develop talent in
youth. Focus on design and implementation of school-initiated
engagement efforts supporting high ability students fostering
school and community achievement. Examination of historical and
contemporary views of outreach and school involvement by
advocates. |

Course Objectives: | The course objectives are primarily derived from standards
recommended by the National Association for Gifted Children and
Council for Exceptional Children.
Students will demonstrate knowledge and skills, focusing on
1. culturally responsive behaviors that promote effective
communication and collaboration with individuals with gifts and
talents, their families, school personnel, and community members.
2. responsiveness to concerns of families of individuals with
gifts and talents.
3. collaboration with stakeholders outside the school setting
who serve individuals with exceptional learning needs and their
families.
4. advocacy for the benefit of individuals with gifts and
talents and their families.
5. collaboration with individuals with gifts and talents, their
families, general, and special educators, and other school staff
to articulate a comprehensive preschool through secondary
educational program.
6. collaboration with families, community members, and
professionals in assessment of individuals with gifts and
talents.
7. the influence of social and emotional development on
interpersonal relationships and learning of individuals with
gifts and talents.
8. communication and consultation with school personnel about
the characteristics and needs of individuals with gifts and
