Course Objectives: | Students will be able to:
• Expand and demonstrate knowledge of content and curriculum that are essential to the advanced study of secondary social studies education.
• Interpret and create a sophisticated secondary social studies curriculum that reflects state, local, and national content standards.
• Develop knowledge of advanced instructional materials and curriculums for teaching social studies education in the secondary school setting.
• Use their practitioner’s knowledge of social, linguistic, and cultural diversity to create an equitable and culturally responsive classroom that is theoretically grounded in the latest research.
• Articulate sophisticated, coherent, and defensible rationales for curricular and instructional decision-making.
• Continue to develop in their ability to seamlessly and deliberately vary their instructional roles (e.g., instructor, facilitator, audience), instructional strategies, and materials to support active student engagement in worthwhile learning for all students.
• Engage in collaborative inquiry. |
Topical Outline: | I. Foundations of secondary social studies as a part of the 6-12 grade social studies curriculum.
II. Advanced secondary social studies curriculum and curricular decision-making.
III. Advanced interpretations and/or considerations for inclusion and exclusion of the topics for understanding in the social studies curriculum.
IV. Advanced pedagogical practices and instructional strategies that foster meaningful, integrative, value-based, challenging, and active learning experiences for students. |
