Course Objectives: | In Education Around the World, students will learn and be able to:
1. Examine the work of education as a reflection of a society’s sociocultural norms and political economy.
2. Develop perspectives on the interrelationships between local, national, and international policies and systems that guide education and their relationship to access and opportunity historically and contemporarily.
3. Articulate the complexity of human behavior as functions of both commonalities and diversity within and across cultural, social, and national group boundaries and the role of education in shaping that behavior.
4. Analyze major issues facing societies across the world as they seek to universalize access to quality education for all.
5. Investigate how ideas and practices in education cross national boundaries and the role that various national and international organizations play in shaping education around the world.
6. Identify strengths and limitations of international, global, and comparative research and practice in education. |
Topical Outline: | Education Around the World is designed to provide opportunities for students to develop a broad and conceptually rich understanding of historical and current issues in education across the globe. While there may be variations in pedagogical approaches as different faculty teach the course, the following is a general topical outline:
1. Overview and Definitions of Global, International, and Comparative Education.
2. History, Perspectives, and Contemporary Issues in Education Around the World.
3. The Purposes and Place of Schooling in Various Societies.
4. Childhood and Adolescence in Schools Across Cultures.
5. Tensions and Challenges in Education and “Globalization.”
6. Living and Learning in a Multilingual World.
7. Global Educational Reforms, Policies, and Social Change.
8. Examinations and Comparisons of International Educational Achievement.
