Course ID: | FISH 4500/6500. 3 hours. | Course Title: | Fish Physiology | Course Description: | Basic fish physiology with an emphasis on the effects of environmental stresses on physiological functions of fish. | Oasis Title: | Fish Physiology | Prerequisite: | FISH(ECOL)(MARS)(WILD) 4300/6300 | Semester Course Offered: | Offered fall semester every year. | Grading System: | A-F (Traditional) |
| Course Objectives: | This course will provide a detailed overview of the physiology
of fishes and provide students with an understanding of:
-The unique physiological characteristics and adaptations that
allow fish to survive and thrive in an aquatic environment.
-The consistencies and variations in the characteristics of
physiological systems within and between fish groups and with
other vertebrates. | Topical Outline: | 1. Basic structural features of fishes
2. Sensory systems and communication
3. Locomotion and buoyancy
4. Feeding and Digestion
5. Growth and metabolism
6. Reproduction
7. Cardiovascular system
8. Gas Exchange
9. Osmoregulation and ion balance
10. Nitrogen excretion and metabolism
10. Acid-base regulation
11. Central nervous system
12. Endocrine systems
13. Immune systems
14. Aquatic toxicology | |
Course ID: | FISH 4500L/6500L. 1 hour. 3 hours lab per week. |
Course Title: | Fish Physiology Lab |
Course Description: | Laboratory techniques for gaining a basic understanding of fish
physiology. Students will use a hands-on approach to
investigate the theoretical concepts covered in Fish Physiology. |
Oasis Title: | Fish Physiology Lab |
Prerequisite: | FISH(ECOL)(MARS)(WILD) 4300/6300 |
Corequisite: | FISH 4500/6500 |
Semester Course Offered: | Offered fall semester every year. |
Grading System: | A-F (Traditional) |
|
Course Objectives: | In the laboratory, students will gain hands-on experience
with fish physiology core concepts such as anatomy, morphology,
locomotion, bioenergetics, reproductive physiology and
behavior. Students will conduct activities and experiments in a
supervised laboratory setting where they will apply the
scientific method for discovery. Students will pose a
question, formulate hypothesis, design an experiment, make
observations, collect and analyze data, and evaluate the
original hypothesis. These efforts will be described in
written lab reports prepared by the students. |
Topical Outline: | Water quality
Fish anatomy (internal and external)
Functional morphology
Locomotion
Bioenergetics
Avoidance behaviors
Reproductive behaviors
Current topics in fish physiology (graduate presentations) |
Honor Code Reference: | All students are expected to uphold the UGA Student Honor Code
found in "A Culture of Honesty," "I will be academically honest
in all of my academic work and will not tolerate academic
dishonesty of others." Alleged violations will be reported to
the Office of the Vice President for Instruction as described
in the University Academic Honesty Policy. |
