Course Title: | Emerging Media Interaction Design and Usability |
Course Description: | The fundamentals of user-centered design for interaction and
usability and accessibility testing. Students will learn
principles and review case studies in user interaction design,
apply this knowledge to the development of interactive
interfaces and prototypes, and test product use with members of
the target audience. |
Oasis Title: | EM Interaction Design |

Pre or Corequisite: | JRMC 7010 |
Semester Course Offered: | Offered spring semester every year. |
Grading System: | A-F (Traditional) |
|
Course Objectives: | Students will:
* Learn how to design interfaces for user interaction based on
established standards, guidelines.
* Become familiar with empirical research on the cognitive,
affective, and behavioral effects of design and user interaction.
* Apply these principles to the iterative design of interfaces
for interactive applications or features.
* Learn about the principles of effective usability research
and apply them to the testing and refinement of interfaces. |
Topical Outline: | I. Understanding Interaction and Interaction Design: An overview
of the design process, user experience, and the role of the
interface in communication technology.
II. Effects of Interface Characteristics: Understanding the role
of design in shaping behavior, cognition, attitudes, and social
interaction.
III. Designing for an Audience: Understanding how to identify
target audience, and gather and analyze relevant data for
formative prototyping.
IV. Usability Testing and Evaluation: Learning about how to
conduct effective evaluation, including usability testing and
field studies. Students will conduct a usability test on one of
their projects and discuss changes to be implemented based on
its results. |
