Course Title: | Disability and Education Law |
Course Description: | Students with disabilities are entitled to specific educational services and accommodations in public schools in the United States. This course will introduce undergraduate and graduate students to federal and state laws and regulations that apply to the provision of educational services for students with disabilities from birth through age 21. |

Course Objectives: | 1. Students will learn the history of special education and civil rights for students with disabilities.
2. Students will become familiar with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Parts B and C, including the rights of students and parents, the responsibilities of schools, and special provisions for disciplinary hearings involving students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
3. Students will learn of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), including best practices in determining and implementing reasonable accommodations for students.
4. Students will learn best practices in implementing federal and state laws and regulations in the public school setting.
5. Students will demonstrate a working knowledge of the course materials through successful completion of assignments and a final examination. |
