Course Objectives: | Students will be able to:
• Analyze, synthesize, and evaluate the work of prominent
theorists in the foundations of education, educational
philosophy, and educational theory
• Analyze, synthesize, and evaluate the work of prominent
theorists in English Education, teacher education, and
curriculum studies
• Discuss the implications of theoretical and philosophical
traditions on teacher orientations to schooling, knowledge,
curriculum, and historical and ongoing movements in
educational policy and practice, with an emphasis on English
Education
• Establish, through independent research and reading, and
then demonstrate, through discussions and written products,
specialized expertise in a particular philosophical or
theoretical tradition related to English Education
• Apply multiple theoretical and philosophical traditions to
engage in argumentation and analysis around the production of
teachers in the cultural, institutional, and popular milieus |
Topical Outline: | 1. History of major philosophical movements (e.g., Common
Schooling, Classicalism, etc.) as these have influenced
American education and therefore influenced English Education
2. Outline of major developments in educational theory and
philosophy through authors within and beyond English
Education
3. Teaching as philosophical practice; obstacles to
consideration of teaching as philosophical practice
4. The role of English Education as a home for the production
of new educational theory led by practicing teachers |
