control, and public health issues affecting export and import

Course Objectives: | The objective of this course is to educate veterinarians on the
significant poultry health, disease control, and public health
issues affecting export and import of poultry. At the
conclusion of the course, veterinarians are expected to be
knowledgeable about international trade policies and
restrictions as regards to poultry production. |
Topical Outline: | Presence or absence of certain poultry diseases can
significantly affect a country's ability to export poultry meat
or eggs. The diagnosis, eradication, sanitation, and testing
to eliminate or prevent introduction of these diseases will be
covered.
Students will learn about the impact of zoonotic and
nonzoonotic poultry diseases such as Exotic Newcastle Disease,
Avian Influenza and others.
1. OIE requirements for international trade regarding "List A"
diseases
2. Methods of testing and interpretation of results
3. Proper biosecurity and hygiene requirements to prevent
introduction of "List A" diseases
Students will learn about the impact of foodborne pathogens on
human/public health. They will also learn about the economics
of poultry in a global market.
1. Global cost of foodborne illness and how the WHO responds
to outbreak
2. International and national regulations on the major causes
of human foodborne illness associated with meat and eggs
3. How to test and interpret results to meet international
standards for the export market |
