Course Objectives: | The course provides students with opportunities to:
1. Develop the procedural skills necessary to analyze,
synthesize,and evaluate diverse educational materials
critically and charitably
2. Engage and advance in the historical and comparative study
of religion
3. Understand the common roots of the Abrahamic faiths and what
they continue to share in today’s religiously diverse world
4. Locate the reasons for each of these religions (and various
traditions within them) to distinguish themselves from one
another and develop in isolation from and
interaction with one another
5. Apply course materials to personal and professional
knowledge, experiences, and goals |
Topical Outline: | Taking a topical approach, this course surveys and compares
the interrelated ways in which these religious traditions have
discerned, construed, and enacted these goals through:
(1) scripture and tradition
(2) their portrayals of divine unity
(3) structures of religious authority
(4) worship and ritual
(5) ethics
(6) material culture
(7) relation to socio-political order
The general expectation is that one week will be devoted to
each of these seven topics or modules. |
