Course Objectives: | This course focuses on the development of students' abilities to
understand, speak, read, and write in Spanish. Students will
be able to read, write, and carry on basic conversation in the
past, present, and future tenses. They will be able to express
their own ideas, make inquiries, and respond to questions
about familiar topics. They will be prepared for common
situations encountered while traveling in the target culture.
They will be capable of reading basic descriptive and narrative
texts, as well as some authentic materials. They will be able
to
write short letters and compositions about familiar topics.
They will garner knowledge about Spanish phonetics and Spanish-
speaking cultures. |
Topical Outline: | Functions: talking about the past, present and future;
influencing others; agreeing and disagreeing; describing and
explaining; expressing courtesy and respect; expressing
emotional involvement; giving commands; expressing wishes;
making requests and recommendations; advising; talking about
what you would do/should have done; ordering and making polite
requests.
Topics and Vocabulary: parts of the body; medical situations;
places; stores; geographical features; professions; social
life; advice; money; business; real estate; travel; restaurants;
hotels; sports; relationships; pastimes.
Grammar: future; superlatives; present subjunctive (in noun,
adjective, and adverbial clauses); commands; present perfect
(indicative and subjunctive); past subjunctive; conditional;
if-clauses; subjunctive after certain conjunctions.
Pronunciation: Attention will be given to vowels, consonants,
stress, and intonation throughout the course.
Culture: Cultural material on customs, geography, history,
literature, art, architecture, and politics of the Spanish-
speaking world will be incorporated into each unit. |
