Description:
The Biomedical Physiology major has a comprehensive human physiology-focused curriculum that fosters a strong knowledge base in physiology ā the study of how the body functions ā as well as critical thinking skills. Introductory science courses (biology, chemistry, math, and physics) plus biostatistics and biochemistry strengthen and broaden the science-related skill set of students. Upper-level physiology courses incorporate problem-solving and active-learning approaches. The curriculum also includes a career-skills course that targets core workplace competencies and enables students to explore opportunities in health and biotechnology fields. Moreover, flexibility is built into the curriculum to enable students to simultaneously meet pre-professional course requirements while also exploring different areas of interest in physiology. This multi-faceted approach will optimally prepare students for subsequent training in professional and graduate programs as well as meet the diverse needs of the healthcare, biomedical, and life-sciences industries.
Details
Career Opportunities:
Biomedical Physiology graduates will be prepared for subsequent training in professional and graduate programs as well as to meet the diverse needs of the healthcare, biomedical, and life-sciences industries.
Expectations
of Transfer Students:
Students who intend to major in Biomedical Physiology should have completed general biology (BIOL 1107-1107L and BIOL 1108-1108L) and general chemistry (CHEM 1211-1211L and CHEM 1212-1212L) before taking VPHY 3107-3107D. Ideally, VPHY 3107L is taken the same semester as VPHY 3107-3107D. To be prepared for upper-division VPHY classes we recommend students have completed the first organic chemistry, biochemistry, and physics.
Special Requirements:
Undergraduates in the College of Veterinary Medicine must earn a grade of āCā (2.0) or better in major-required courses.
