MINORS

A minor must contain 15 to 18 semester hours of course work, with at least 9 hours of upper division course work (numbered 3000 or above). Courses taken to satisfy Core Areas I through V may not be counted as course work in the minor. Courses taken in Core Area VI may be counted as course work in the minor. The intent of establishing minor fields of study is to offer students the opportunity to broaden their education through the minor field. The selection of a minor field of study should be made to fulfill this goal.

The department shall make available to students the requirements for the minor--the total number of hours required, along with the enumeration of any particular courses that are mandated or excluded, residency requirements (if any) for the minor courses, and grade requirements for minor courses if those requirements differ from the general University standard for credit (a D as the minimum passing grade).

A student may select a minor in consultation with his or her advisor. The student may then consult an advisor in the minor field who can inform the student of remaining requirements for the minor. When the student has met the requirements for the minor, the advisor in the minor field will then certify that fact to the student's dean. The completed minor will be recorded on the student's permanent transcript, but not on the diploma. For students completing a minor after graduation, the statement shall appear on the transcript in chronological order following the courses taken subsequent to graduation. A student must be enrolled at the time a minor is approved by the University Council, or subsequent to that date, to receive credit for the minor. A student may have more than one minor.

Program Description
The minor in Business gives non-business undergraduates the opportunity to gain a basic understanding of business. The minor in business consists of five specific courses chosen to develop a foundational knowledge in the basic aspects of business, including accounting, economics, finance, management, and marketing. This cohesive set of courses provides students with the fundamental business skills to complement their education and broaden their post-graduation opportunities.

Note: The minor in business is not open to intended business majors or declared business majors (B.B.A. or A.B. Economics).

Entrance Requirements
Students may apply for admission to the minor in Business upon completion of the accounting and economics requirements below. One of these course requirements must be completed. The other course must either be completed or be taken during the same semester in which the student applies to the minor. Note that verification of the accounting and economics requirements will be done through the use of the student's official UGA record. Courses not posted to this official record will not be considered. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2, no less than a total of 45 credit hours completed, and no less than 15 institutional credit hours completed. Students will be evaluated for admission based on standardized scores (ACT/SAT - no exceptions), an optional ETS score, current major, and ACCT and ECON grades. Space is limited.

Required Courses (15 hours):

Accounting Requirement (3 hours):
(ACCT 1160 or ACCT 1160E)* or (ACCT 2101 or ACCT 2101H or ACCT 2101E) 3

* It is recommended that students take ACCT 1160 unless ACCT 2101 is a required course for their major.

Economics Requirement (3 hours)*:
(ECON 2105 or ECON 2105H or ECON 2105E) OR (ECON 2106 or ECON 2106H or ECON 2106E) 3

* Courses taken to satisfy Core Areas I through V cannot be counted as course work in the minor. Therefore, students should anticipate the need to replace ECON 2105 and/or ECON 2106, if those courses were previously being used to satisfy Area V requirements, with other course work.

Business Foundations (9 hours - courses must be taken at UGA*):
FINA 3001 or FINA 3001H or FINA 3001E 3
