Apply to the UGA Graduate School and include the following: · 3 Letters of recommendation · CV · Statement of Purpose Submit a 500–1000-word statement that addresses your academic interests and goals, your perceived fit with the program and faculty of interest, and describes the experiences that have prepared you for graduate study · Unofficial transcript from each institution of higher education attended · Optional items: examples include writing samples, paper presentations, publications, or other evidence of scholarly or professional work International students: For students whose primary language is not English, proof of English proficiency is required. Students need to submit official university documents according to the UGA Graduate School requirements. Students will also have to show certificate of finances upon acceptance to the program. Application deadline is December 1 for the following fall.

GEOG *

*Unless taken at Master’s level or waived by permission of instructor if student has completed a similar course in Master’s program elsewhere. If waived, 1 additional 3-hour graduate-only credit course, not including GEOG 9000 or any Directed Problems course form any department, must be substituted.

**Students are not permitted to enroll in this course more than once (3 hours) prior to passing Written and Oral Comprehensive Exams.)

Graduate-Level Courses

*Students who are selected for teaching assistantships are required to take Graduate Teaching Seminar, GRSC 7770.

Select additional courses, as needed, in consultation with an advisor to meet the minimum number of required credit hours for this program.

Qualified students will be nominated by the Graduate Studies Committee for Graduate School Doctoral Fellow Award and Presidential Graduate Fellow Award. Students also are encouraged to seek outside fellowships and scholarships (e.g., NSF Graduate Research Fellowships).

Students are encouraged to pursue research opportunities outside of Athens, when appropriate and in consultation with their committees.

Students are encouraged to pursue internship opportunities when they will facilitate their professional development.

Students are encouraged to present their research at conferences, professional meetings, and symposia. The Department of Geography and Graduate School have funds available to defray travel expenses for students who present
