Entomology houses diverse research programs that emphasize systems-based approaches addressing environmental threats, food security, and human health. Research programs advance fundamental knowledge across core disciplines including Entomology, Evolutionary Biology and Systematics, Molecular Biology, Physiology, and Genomics. Emphasis areas include Species Interactions (e.g. Insect-Microbe Interactions, Insect-Plant Interactions, Host-Parasite interactions), Agroecosystems and Integrated Pest Management, Medical Entomology, Aquatic Ecology, Urban Entomology, Invasive Species Biology, and Social Insects and Pollinator Conservation.
Ph.D. students in Entomology are trained to become independent scholars with the research skills and depth of disciplinary knowledge across the interdisciplinary insect sciences to lead their own research programs. Ph.D. students work with faculty mentors to design a course of study that provides rigorous training necessary to address key questions in aforementioned research areas. An emphasis is on dissertation research, with foundational knowledge provided by coursework in Entomology and related disciplines. The program is deliberately designed to be flexible to complement the student’s background and facilitate their career objectives.
