Passing written qualifying exams by the beginning of the student’s 6th semester. The department offers exams in 6 subjects: Algebra, Real Analysis, Complex Analysis, Topology, Probability and Numerical Analysis. Students should pass 3 of these exams, or pass 2 of them and receive the grade of “Master’s Pass” (in between “Pass” and “Fail”) on 2 others. Passing oral qualifying exams by the beginning of the student’s 8th semester. The Oral Qualifying Exam is based on the student's anticipated area of specialization. In it, the student is expected to present material from one or a few research papers and to answer general questions about the area of specialization.

Writing a dissertation embodying the results of original research which is acceptable to the   student's dissertation committee. A final oral defense of the dissertation. A student's progress towards the Ph.D. degree is initially supervised by a three-person committee, increasing to four or five members following the written qualifying exams. The student's faculty advisor chooses this committee and is its chair.

GRSC 7770, LLED 7768, LLED 7769, MATH 7005, and MATH 9006 cannot be counted towards the program of study.

Select additional courses, as needed, in consultation with an advisor to meet the minimum number of required credit hours for this program.

Teaching assistantships Qualified students will be nominated by the Graduate Program Committee for Graduate School Presidential and PhD Fellows awards. Students also are encouraged to seek outside fellowships and scholarships (e.g., NSF Graduate Research Fellowships).

Students are encouraged to pursue research opportunities outside of Athens, when appropriate and in consultation with their committees

Students are encouraged to pursue internship opportunities when those internships will facilitate their professional development and career aspirations

Students are encouraged to present their research at conferences, professional meetings, and symposia. The Mathematics Department (and Graduate School) have funds available to defray travel expenses. Students also are encouraged to write grant proposals to help fund their research and to develop grant-writing skills. Students are expected to publish their research findings in peer-reviewed journals.
