Global and Multicultural Advertising -- Examination of the theory and practice of global competition and worldwide markets. Brand management in very different cultural, regulatory, and competitive conditions will also be examined.

Advertising and Society -- Designed to foster a critical understanding of advertising and promotion as an institution, and its role in communication, society, culture, and our economy. Students develop a framework in which to understand the continuing dialogue between supporters and critics, and confront issues related to the institution's ethical conduct, regulatory issues, and social responsibility.

PR Ethics, Diverse Culture, and Cross-Cultural Leadership -- Examines the intersection of public relations ethics in communicating with domestic and global multicultural publics. Case studies and theory are applied to contemporary situations exploring how economics and politics affect issues of inclusion, corporate purpose, communication, and leadership across cultures. Considerations for avoiding marginalization are analyzed.

Representation and Identity in Entertainment Media -- Analysis of the representation of identity (such as intersections of class, sexuality, race, ethnicity, and gender) and socio-cultural implications in entertainment media and popular culture.

Telenovelas, Culture, and Society -- Examination of the connections between media, culture, and society as participants study the world's most watched television genre: the Latin American telenovela. The class focuses on the genre's contexts of production, consumption, regulation, and generalization, and analyzes telenovelas as a public forum for the negotiation of sociocultural issues.

International Mass Communication -- Mass media of the world--what they are like, how they operate, and what impact they have. Philosophies of different systems will be compared, as well as efforts at development or regulation of these systems. Attention will be given to print and electronic media and to international news agencies.

Social Effects of Mass Communication -- Patterns of influence among mass communication and the individuals, organizations, and institutions in society. Current research and critical literature are analyzed in reviewing debates about claims of media effects, including socialization of children, formation of attitudes and values, promotion of social behaviors, and legitimation of power structures.

Race, Gender, and the Media -- Relationship between men, women, and racial and ethnic minorities in the United States and the media.
