Course Title: | Global Environmental Health: Focus on Developing Countries |
Course Description: | Students will investigate and analyze contemporary environmental
health issues of countries in the developing world, evaluate
effectiveness of current environmental regulations, and develop
strategies for effective change through adjustments in policies
or regulations, application of remediation strategies, and/or
promotion of sustainability measures. |

Course Objectives: | 1. To examine the key environmental issues of developing
countries in the context of each country’s culture, history, and
economic status
2. To analyze and evaluate links between the strength and
enforcement of environmental policies and regulations, promotion
of environmental sustainability, and environmental health
outcomes
3. To critically evaluate environmental justice issues faced by
indigenous populations and propose culturally-sensitive
solutions
4. To propose remediation options to eradicate or lessen
environmental damage in developing countries based on available
economic and technological resources |
Topical Outline: | 1. Millennium Development Goals: review and analysis of progress
to date
2. Overview of environmental challenges faced by developing
countries
3. Overview of environmental justice: concepts and prevalence in
developing versus developed countries
4. For a minimum of six different developing countries,
students will investigate:
a. Each country’s history and culture, focusing on events that
impact or shape current economic and environmental policies
b. Regulatory framework of each country for environmental
protection and remediation
c. Major pollution sources and effects on the environmental and
human health
d. Impacts of urbanization, poverty, and traditional
agricultural and/or industrial practices on environmental
quality
e. Mitigation and management of environmental contamination,
taking into account each country’s economic and technological
resources
f. Roles of education, human rights, cultural mores, and
politics in promoting and ensuring environmental sustainability
5. Wrap-up: The future: best practices in environmental
health and their application in developing countries |
