V. Social Sciences (9 hours)

  • Students who have not met the Georgia and U.S. Constitution requirement by examination should enroll in POLS 1101 or POLS 1101E or POLS 1101H.
  • A passing grade on an examination on the history of the United States and Georgia is required to satisfy the United States and Georgia History Requirement for all persons receiving a baccalaureate degree from the University, unless exempted by one of the following courses: HIST 2111, HIST 2111E, HIST 2111H, HIST 2112, HIST 2112E, HIST 2112H, HIST 3080H. Examinations are given at University Testing Services. Reexamination is permitted. Contact University Testing Services at (706) 542-3183 for information.

Entrance Requirements
The Social Studies Education major is a high-demand major. After meeting the application requirements, students will be selected based on the high-demand selection criteria listed below. Applications are available on the department’s website: www.coe.uga.edu/esse/academic-programs/social-studies-education/b-s-e-d.   

The following are required to be eligible to apply to the program:
1. Core Areas I-VI completed or in progress at the time of application;
2. Minimum 2.80 GPA overall
      
The following are required to enter the program:
1. Completion of all but 12 credit hours in Core Areas I-VI.
2. Overall GPA of 2.80.
3. Upon enrolling in Block Two courses during the fall semester, all of Core Areas I-VI, must be complete. All electives must also be complete before enrolling in Block Two courses. 
4. A grade of "C" is required in Area VI and all major coursework.

Major Requirements

A baccalaureate degree program must require at least 21 semester hours of upper division courses in the major field and at least 39 semester hours of upper division work overall.

(A minimum grade of "C" (2.0) or higher is required.)

Foreign Language required, if not taken in Area IV.
*Competency in one Foreign Language through the 3rd semester. Competency is defined as the minimum grade of "C" (2.0) or higher throughout all semesters. Any AMSL course at the third level or above can satisfy this requirement.  

*This major requires the completion of one course in ECON, one course in GEOG, one course in HIST, and one course in POLS.

Area of Emphasis Content Courses (21 hours)
Select twenty-one (21) hours of 3000/4000-level courses in one of the following Areas of Emphasis: Economics, Human Geography, History, or Political Science.
One or more of the five Content Pedagogy Courses is preferred. The Content Pedagogy Courses count as corresponding upper-level emphasis area course - Economics, Geography, History, or Political Science.

  • Passing score on Dispositions
  • Passing score on Intern Keys
  • Passing score on Program Key Assessments (PKAs)
  • Completion of MFECOE Exit Survey
  • Attendance of certification session
  • MFECOE Ethics Training Assessment
  • MFECOE Professional Ethics and Conduct Agreement (PECA Contract)
  • GaPSC Grade Bands Requirement Met
  • GACE Content Assessment (Certification Requirement)
