A minimum of 46 hours

To be considered for our doctoral program, we: recommend that applicants’ undergraduate GPA be at least a 3.0 and that applicants have at least two years of teaching; require all applicants to have a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in an area of language and/or literacy education, or a related field; and require international applicants score at least a score of 100 on the TOEFL test, with a minimum score of 26 in speaking and 25 in writing; score at least a score of 7.5 on the IELTS test, with a minimum score of 8 in speaking and 7.0 in writing; and demonstrate proficiency with two languages as evidenced by a bachelor’s degree in English linguistics and literature OR a master’s degree where English was the medium of instruction

In addition to the written application, the LCL program area requires either a face-to-face or web-based interview. For the 2023/2024 academic year, interviews will be conducted in mid-January and April 2024. The LCL Program Coordinator will inform applicants of the dates ahead of time. Fall semester is the only admissions term in which funding is awarded each year. Funding consideration will be given to students who apply for Fall matriculation by January 1. Graduates typically become tenure track or clinical faculty in intensive research and/or teaching public higher education institutions or private universities in the U.S. and other countries such as Canada, South Korea, Russia, and China. Other career opportunities for our graduates include working in leadership positions in schools or school districts, working for research grant institutions, leading non-profit organizations, or becoming award-winning children’s literature authors.

Students also are encouraged to seek outside fellowships and scholarships (e.g., SREB Dissertation Fellowships, Spencer Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship).

Students are encouraged to pursue research opportunities outside of Athens, when appropriate and in consultation with their committees.

Students are encouraged to pursue internship opportunities when such opportunities facilitate their professional development. Students can help organize and run an annual children’s literature conference, and/or administer the state-wide children’s book awards for grades K-8.

Students are encouraged to present their research at conferences, professional meetings, and symposia. The Dept. Of Language and Literacy Education (and Graduate School) have funds available to defray travel expenses for students who present their research. Students also are encouraged to write grant proposals to help fund their research and to develop grant-writing skills. Students have a chance to learn how to manage a scholarly journal through our student-led Journal of Language and Literacy Education and create and run a one- or two-day scholarly conference.
