-GRE Score is now optional. If you do not submit GRE scores, an additional writing sample is required. The writing sample should include 300 words written in complete sentences with a good flow of English. It should reflect your persistence, problem solving skills, and motivation, and elaborate on the following: (1) A project/task that you worked during your career from the initial stages to completion, and (2) An example of a challenge or problem that you faced, describing the process of finding a solution and how the solution was implemented. -Although there are no formal course requirements for admission, your previous coursework and training should reflect preparation for advanced study in food science.

-International students: For students whose primary language is not English, proof of English proficiency is required. Students need to submit official university documents according to the UGA Graduate School requirements. Students will also have to show certificate of finances upon acceptance to the program. Application deadlines are October 15th and April 15th for Spring and Fall matriculation (international applicants), and November 1st and July 1st for Spring and Fall matriculation (domestic applicants).

Program of study must include Food Processing, Food Engineering, Food Microbiology, Food Chemistry, Nutritional Quality, and Biochemistry if not already completed.

Select additional courses, as needed, in consultation with an advisor to meet the minimum number of required credit hours for this program.

M.S. and Ph.D. graduates of the Food Science program have gone on to work, live, and study in a variety of places. FST graduates work in the food industry as quality control specialists, product development scientists, and process development engineers. Others work in governmental agencies such as the USDA or FDA to maintain the safety and quality of our food supply and to ensure economic development in the U.S. Some choose to work in universities and colleges, where they train students and conduct basic research in food science.

Qualified students will be nominated by the Graduate Affairs Committee for Graduate School Presidential and PhD Fellows awards. Students are also encouraged to seek outside fellowships and scholarships (e.g., NSF Graduate Research Fellowships).

Students are encouraged to pursue research opportunities outside of Athens, when appropriate and in consultation with their major professor/advisory committees.

Students are encouraged to pursue internship opportunities when those internships will facilitate their professional development and career aspirations.

Students are encouraged to present their research at conferences, professional meetings, and symposia. Students also are encouraged to write grant proposals to help fund their research and to develop grant-writing skills. Students are expected to publish their research findings in peer-reviewed journals.
