The Department expects the applicant for the Master of Arts (M.A.) degree to have an undergraduate major or its equivalent in Spanish or Romance Languages from either the University of Georgia, or another accredited institution of higher learning in the United States, or a recognized foreign institution. The Graduate Admissions Committees will consider, on an individual basis, applications of students who present a special case. Three Letters of recommendation CV Statement of Purpose Writing Sample Notarized copies of degree certificates form part of the application dossier. Copies of official transcripts, listing all grades for all courses taken. Foreign nationals must present results for the TOEFL or IELTS exams from within the last two years. Demonstrate knowledge of one relevant foreign language (other than English). Demonstrated by either receiving a grade of B or better in a foreign language courses number 2002 or higher, or passing a language examination offered by a language department at UGA. Comprehensive examination Thesis and oral defense of thesis (thesis track) or Defense of examination (non-thesis track)

Twelve hours of coursework must be open to graduate students only.

Select additional courses, as needed, in consultation with an advisor to meet the minimum number of required credit hours for this program.

Our students are prepared for careers in academia and job sectors which require advanced knowledge of languages and cultures, as well as superior teaching, research and writing skills. Some of our most recent graduates at the MA level have gone to pursue their PhD at University of Texas, Austin or Florida State University, or found teaching positions in secondary education.

Admitted students, upon petition, may transfer a maximum of 6 hours credit

Teaching Assistantship Qualified students will be nominated by the Graduate Admission Committees for the Master’s Fellows Award.
