The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Statistics is designed to prepare students to work on the frontiers of the discipline of Statistics, whether the student's career choice leads them into research and teaching or into leadership roles in business, industry and government. The program is very flexible particularly in the choice of electives and of research topic. Students may even choose to do research on the interface of statistics and some other discipline, such as computer science, genetics, forestry, bioinformatics, economics, etc. The course requirements are designed to ensure that students have sufficient training in probability, statistical inference, computing, and applications to prepare for research on the cutting edge of statistics.
The Statistics (M.S.) degree is not a prerequisite for the PhD program, but training equivalent to that specified in the M.S. program is necessary preparation for the PhD core courses. An incoming PhD student may waive some or all of the first-year core by passing one or both parts of the PhD qualifying exam in August prior to beginning his/her first year of study. Proficiency in mathematics, particularly in real analysis, and in computing is indispensable for successful completion of the PhD program.
