Course introduces heritage students to the skills needed to read, translate, and discuss Chinese fundamental literary texts.

Course is designed for students who hope to improve their language ability in modern Chinese and cultural knowledge in contemporary China after they’ve completed Advanced Chinese II or reached an equivalent proficiency level. It is of particular interest to students whose academic, professional, or personal goals are related to contemporary China.

Building on the foundations of conversational and colloquial Chinese, this course introduces the uses of literary Chinese in traditional and contemporary writings, enhances linguistic and reasoning abilities through comparative analysis of grammar, and advances skills in speaking, reading, and writing advanced modern Chinese.

Selected readings of Chinese literature and literary criticism in the original language. Texts of various genres and from different periods of the Chinese literary tradition will be read and discussed in Chinese.
